What You Should Expect From the Breeder

The serious breeder strives to produce the finest animals possible. These breeders take responsibility for and stand behind every puppy they produce. They may belong to the National Breed Club as well as local or Regional clubs that may be "all breed" or specialize to only Retrievers. The Breeder should be actively involved in Field work, the Obedience ring and/or the Show ring. The Breeder who participates wants to prove how good his/her dogs are and has a reputation to maintain. The Breeder who does not participate never really knows how good his/her dogs really are.

The breeder should show you a clean environment. The puppies should be healthy and well socialized and their dam should have a good temperament. The Breeder should show you proof that both the sire and dam of the puppies have had their hips x-rayed and read by a qualified radiologist or recognized institution and that they have had their eyes examined by a Board certified Ophthalmologist. The Breeder should also be willing to answer your questions about any other possible hereditary problems (Von Will brand's Disease, Epilepsy, Heart Disease, Hypothyroidism, etc.)

On purchasing your puppy, the Breeder should provide  you with a record of the dates of worming and a certificate of all inoculations given to date. You should be given written instructions on feeding, training and general care and be given a specified period of time to have the puppy examined by your own Veterinarian.

Any warranty against the development of hereditary problems or disqualifications in a dog intended for showing or breeding, should be explicit and in writing.

If you do not feel comfortable with the warranty offered do not purchase a puppy from that Breeder.

Every person who sells a dog as a purebred must identify the dog for registration by either a tattoo marking, nose print or electronic chip implant. The Breeder must take the necessary steps to register and transfer the dog in the Canadian Kennel Club records at no additional charge to the buyer. If the certificate of registration is not provided to the buyer within a reasonable length of time (6 months) the seller can be charged for violation under the Canadian Livestock Pedigree Act and disciplinary action taken by the CKC.
