There are three styles of decoy available from woodfowl.com but all are hand carved and painted by Rob Schwartz. Rob accepts commissions for 2-3 pieces per year which are completed on a first come first served basis. He will take orders for any type of bird and finish to the purchasers specifications on both pose and amount of detail. Since variations in price are dependent on the specifics ordered he will be pleased to quote the bird of your choice. The rest of his time is devoted to pieces for competitions. Prices vary according to the size and detail of the piece but as a guideline Rob bases his decoy prices on $15. per hour and feels the carving of a small smooth decoy (teal, ruddy etc. ) generally takes 15-20 hours. Larger, more detailed decorative decoys with feathers etched and burned as well as painted (especially if a vermiculated species) can easily take well over 100 hours just to carve & burn. As a general rule the time spent on carving vs. painting is a ratio of 40-60 so a 20 hour carving can easily take 30 hours to paint in detail. (S) designates "smoothie" or "slick" which is in the style of a working decoy without etched or burned feather detail. Feathers and groups are painted . There are no fragile parts such as tail or wingtips thin or under cut which would break off if used in the field.
(IWCA) is a new style for Rob which is recognized in the U.S. for competition purposes and this style will be available for 2003 and subsequent years. Etched and burned feathers are not allowed but bill detail, tail detail and raised primaries as well as "complex painting" is encouraged. (D) designates "decorative" which has all feathers both etched and burned in detail. Feathers and groups are hand-painted in detail.
Slight variations make each decoy, "one of a kind" for it is virtually impossible to reproduce a previous decoy even if the same species and pose.
Commissioned pieces (custom ordered by client) by species, amount of detail and pose welcomed. Although Rob will ship world wide, he refuses to quote art sales to Russia, Nigeria or the Netherlands due to the high number of art fraud scams which originate in those countries.
