Canadian National Carving Championships, Kitchener, Ontario ; Westlake , Cleveland Ohio, and Prairie Canada Carving Championships, Winnipeg March 18 -26th 2006 Left for the spring circuit March 13th to attend Canadian Nationals in Kitchener Ontario, Westlake Ohio competition as well as Prairie Canada Carving Championships in Winnipeg on the way back. Just got in last night (March 27th) after 7765 km on the road with a $1200. total in gas. Had some excitement in Northern Ontario with blowing snow which made me glad I had taken the truck instead of the car and on the return trip in almost exactly the same place (Matheson to Ignace Ontario) nearly 1000 km of snow and slush in one day of driving. I picked up Jean Minaudier in St. Claude Manitoba on the way to Ontario and after dropping off our CN entries in Kitchener joined Pat Godin for the drive to Westlake. It was a good trip for Pat won Decorative life size Best of Show with an incredible pintail hen as well as taking Best of Show in the Professional IWCA style decoys with a drake Wigeon. Jean won Best of Show with a beautiful drake wood duck miniature on an ammunition box complete with little carved shot shells. All 9 of my birds in Ohio entered got ribbons ( 2 firsts of species, GWT and Black drakes, 3 seconds GWT hen, blue wing teal drake and low head pintail drake, 2 thirds on canvasback and wood duck drakes, 2 HM's on canvasback hen and bufflehead drake. We had a great time seeing old friends, as well as meeting and making new ones. I returned to Ontario to find both of the birds I had left in Ontario for the Canadian Nationals had placed 2nd and 3rd in contemporary decoys. I moved into Open (Professional) skill level for the first time in Winnipeg and while contemporary entries were lower than usual, I placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd in puddle ducks and 1st and 2nd in divers. My pair of green wing teal went on to win Best of Division and 2nd Best of Division but the blue wing teal that placed third in puddles was unable to rise any higher and 3rd Best of Division was awarded to a plover from the shorebird category of the division.
