NORTH CAROLINA DECOY CARVING CHAMPIONSHIP

FEBRUARY 4-6,  2005                    Hit Counter

Each year the organizers of the North Carolina Decoy carving championship issue a challenge bird for a special competition where after judging participants trade their work. First place trades with second and vice versa all the way down the line including birds that did not place or were disqualified for not self righting or riding properly.

The rules are simple the bird must be built on a cork body in the style of an IWCA working decoy but must be no longer than 4 inches long (miniature) unless the species for that year is a long tailed or pintail duck then the rules allow for an additional 1/2 inch to 4 1/2 inches. Paint must be practical and hand painted splits or vermiculation are not allowed. The bird must be keeled with a provision for anchor line attachment and will be required to self right when placed in the float tank upside down and then ride/float properly as if a real working decoy.

Last years winner picks the species for the subsequent year and this year a drake wood duck has been chosen for 2005..

This little wood duck drake is now in the private collection of

Patrick Eubanks, Farmville, North Carolina.

The species selected for the 2006 Trade decoy is a drake pintail, maximum length 4 5/8 inches.
